Re: Royal Navy officer training
My uncle who died this year unexpectedly (and was gay) was in the Navy for 30 odd years. He pretty much went to every country in the world, had an amazing life and one of my cousins children join a couple of years ago and is doing okay.

My uncle said back in the day a lot of gay men did join the navy precisely because they could get on with their lives at time (when he joined up) it was illegal back home.

I remember asking him in reality what sort of percentage of the men he served with were actually gay his response was "that all depended how far from Port we were!" Bless him.

I say go for it, what a great career.

Re: Royal Navy officer training
He will end up coming to my town.

He will end up making a cunt of himself in that town.

He will be hated by most of the older Personnel who have 'earned' their commission, but there will be loads of them to hate so he wont be targeted.

Make sure he wears a coat down town in the shit weather. Nothing screams 'Matlow' like a bloke wearing just a shirt in the bad weather, it also makes them an obvious target for pissed up locals annoyed that the Matlows are fucking all the local girls. He will be targeted

Tell him that he will catch a dose if he fucks about

Tell him to take a taxi in to town and NEVER get in a car with another Matlow after drinks... because they ALL drink drive.

Tell him to do something useful in the service because there is fuck all out there for ex service men who have no skills that are transferable.

As Dr Johnson said:

"Every man thinks meanly of himself for not having been a soldier, or not having been at sea."

RAF turned me down as well , I wanted to be an air traffic controller but I find didn't have the aptitude.

I had the aptitude to be a codebreaker but there wasn't any vacancies at the time.

Kind of regret not going back 6 months or so later.

Re: Royal Navy officer training
Yeah a schoolmate of mine was a pt officer and he never went to sea
It's his decision at the end of the day it was either this or university which I think I would have preferred or at least thought he would of gone for

My mate trains them down in Plymouth, he's been in 27 years, he's a Petty Officer (I believe), my other mate is an Officer in the Navy and has also done 27 years and still in.

They love the life.

Re: Royal Navy officer training
There was a very good documentary on the History Channel, a couple of years ago, "fly on the wall style", about the course. Several parts.

Link is here:-

I'm sure you could download the entire series or buy a DVD of it, to show your son what to expect.

Re: Royal Navy officer training
Would be interested to know what proportion of the time RN officers spend at sea.... I reckon it would be very low % over a 5 year period. I know a couple and they're almost always shore based.

Re: Royal Navy officer training
If it is officer training, then he should be fine. He'll probably come out with a few decent qualifications as well.

Better than enlisting, it's a good career path that down the road, most employers will look upon favourably
